Inclusive design is important to have the best experience for all users. To achieve accessible design, you have to include and learn from the real life users. Designing accessibly solves the problem for everyone, ensures proper user representation, and expands the range of potential users.

 

Design Process

The double diamond design thinking process is a way to challenge unconscious bias and put the user at the front of the design process. Before jumping into design, you begin to research the problem by brainstorming potential user challenges related to your topic. Before defining the problem, you consider all possible challenges and them reframe the focus of your topic into a statement that explores how might we - how might we achieve a design for a user so that we reach our desired outcome and solve their potential pain points.

Once the problem is defined, we can work on discovering the best solution. This process includes doing user interviews and finding out more about your potential users, and anayzing this data to understand what direction to point your solution. Once you have discovered the solution, you can begin designing.

Once an idea is in the works, it is important to conduct usability testing at various stages to ensure that the design is usable and to uncover problems and discover opportunities to improve. This also allows you to learn more about your users' behaviours and preferences. As you continue through the design process, you may return back to the developing, defining, or even discovering stage to refine your solution to ensure that it is solving the problem.
